G13 2016-11-06 A highly respectable effort from a depleted Oilers squad

Game Notes DET vs EDM

Edmonton Oilers (Head Coach: Todd McLellan) at Detroit Red Wings (Head Coach: Jeff Blashill)

NHL Game #174, Joe Louis Arena, 2016-11-06 03:00:00PM (GMT -0700)

Oilers 2-1

Referees: Dan O’Halloran, Dave Lewis
Linesmen: Steve Barton, Ryan Galloway

Three Stars: Ryan Nugent-Hopkins; Tyler Pitlick; Darren Helm

  • A well played road game against a rapidly descending Red Wings team. In some ways, I found this the most encouraging game of the road trip! Third game in four nights is no joke. Win the game, win the fancies, can’t ask for more.
  • Funny to describe how these Oilers are playing overall lately though, isn’t it? McDavid isn’t really McDaviding very much, and the rest of the team often seems … disjointed. Hopefully it’s just a normal entropic effect of being on a longish road trip. The new lines appear to be helping.
  • Prior to this game, McDavid had the fourth highest ice time in the league for a forward. All the players ahead of him are veterans. Maybe the idea of playing the crap out of him is not a successful long term strategy, especially for a 19-year-old player who was a featured high ice-time player in the World Cup before the season started.
  • Some ‘heavy hockey’ chemistry between Drai and Lucic. Nuge is back too – bet he and Eberle would look good together (as they have for years). Too bad we don’t have a stocky Russian plug and play right winger for McDavid…
  • Some really nice play (again) for Nurse and Gryba (check out the rink map below if you didn’t see my tweet). And they faced a healthy dose of Zetterberg and Tatar, the only two Detroit forwards that have been playing consistently well this season.
  • Huge disparities between the ‘danger’ and ‘raw’ numbers for several players, especially the McDavid line.
  • Well done Oilers – well done.
