G14 2016-11-08 Call it (sigh) a moral victory

Game Notes PIT vs EDM

Edmonton Oilers (Head Coach: Todd McLellan) at Pittsburgh Penguins (Head Coach: Mike Sullivan)

NHL Game #186, PPG Paints Arena, 2016-11-08 05:00:00PM (GMT -0700)

Penguins 4-3

Referees: Kelly Sutherland, Ghislain Hebert
Linesmen: Steve Barton, Derek Amell

Three Stars: Conor Sheary; Evgeni Malkin; Jordan Eberle

  • It’s obvious McDavid takes the idea of a Sid vs Kid rivalry seriously! Yet another terrific game (yawn) from Talbot. And a much needed breakout game for Eberle. That was one big monkey.
  • Apart from the Lucic giveaway, there was pretty much nothing else to dislike about the first period – solid overall play, outscoring the defending Champs on the road.
  • Once behind, the Pens started to apply pressure and the Oilers started to wilt a bit, but hey – the Pens are a top team and the Oilers aren’t (quite, yet).
  • Check out the head to head TOI chart – this was very much a McDavid vs Crosby contest, the two lines were hard matched the whole game.
  • Despite the verbal on “Hemsky” being bad, very little bad happened when Benning and Sekera were on the ice. To my eyes, Matt Benning looks OK overall, but it’s clear he struggles under heavy pressure from NHL players. It’s almost like he’s only played a handful of NHL games …
  • Pouliot the goat, but that goal was mostly just a bad luck bounce as he tried to check Sheary’s stick. Are people actually calling for his head? Seriously?
  • I didn’t think the reffing was bad at all, though according to the picture captured in this tweet, that third Pens goal by Malkin should have been called offside:

  • The fancies overall were about as close as it gets. Check out the rink maps on the KlefLar pairing (not good) and the McDavid line (really good).
  • Sucks we didn’t get a point. Call it a learning experience. Call it a moral victory against a tough team on the road.
