G26 2015-12-02 Oilers vs Beantowners – shot and distance data

Commentary

Two points!  Stop reading, nothing else matters!

  • Nilsson was the star. Not sure why the hacks doing the choosing keep dissing the guy.
  • Despite the Corgis, it was at least a better effort than last night.  The fancystats are more a reflection of the fact that this was the most terrible roster the Oilers have had to ice all of this season, and I’d say even most of last season.
  • For once, the Oilers put a good end to the other teams streaks (five game winning, no shorties by Boston) instead of being their usual slumpbusters.  CHOWDAH!

Wow, like a mirror image of yesterday.  The numbers are terrible but they won.  It’s like secondary scoring matters or something.

  1. Just interested into why score adjusted CF is worse when the oilers were only ever in the lead – just imagined that the presumption was that the team in the lead sat back and defended whilst the team behind, would be shooting it from all angles, trying to tie ?

    1. Good question, Dave. Very observant! The answer is that my score adjustment uses Micah Blake McCurdy’s adjustment factors, which are not just score adjusted, but also venue adjusted. So in that scenario, the home team is always penalized a little bit, while the visiting team gets a bit of an advantage. So if you had two teams play to a perfect 50-50 draw shot wise, the home team would be ‘venue adjusted’ down a bit below 50%, because as the home team, home ice advantage means that a 50-50 split means the visiting team actually played slightly better. Does that make sense?
