G45 2017-01-14 Oilers douse Flames … again!

Game Notes EDM vs CGY

Calgary Flames (Head Coach: Glen Gulutzan) at Edmonton Oilers (Head Coach: Todd McLellan)

NHL Game #649, Rogers Place, 2017-01-14 08:00:00PM (GMT -0700)

Oilers 2-1 (SO)

Referees: Gord Dwyer, Ghislain Hebert
Linesmen: Greg Devorski, Ryan Gibbons

Three Stars: Cam Talbot; Patrick Maroon; Sean Monahan

  • I haven’t been that jittery watching an Oilers game in a long time! Big stakes!
  • Nice sendoff for Hayley Wickenheiser, glad the Oilers did this, and nice to see Wayne and Big Georges in the house.
  • Man, though … this was a hyper-important game for both teams, and the Oilers sleepwalked through the first (with Cam holding them in), and then both teams mostly played not to lose the rest of the way.
  • Which might be understandable in a Bettman-point league, but given the relative fatigue levels of the two teams, that’s inexcusable on the part of the Oilers, who should have made this a track meet from the first whistle.
  • Otherwise, what else to say? Another solid game from Maroon, McDavid was a little ineffective at times, another poor game from Lucic who really really needs to be better, Ebs has a gigantic snake monkey on his back that keeps biting his hands, and glad that Poo looked solid as he’s been diarrhea til now.
  • That OT was heart stopping at times! The shots (all metrics) deficit the Oilers had in regulation they pretty much entirely made up in OT.
  • The Oil maybe didn’t deserve to win that … but based on the OT, they didn’t deserve to lose either. I’ll take it!
