Game Notes EDM vs N.J

New Jersey Devils (Head Coach: John Hynes) at Edmonton Oilers (Head Coach: Todd McLellan)

NHL Game #631, Rogers Place, 2017-01-12 07:00:00PM (GMT -0700)

Oilers 3-2 (OT)

Referees: Jon McIsaac, Brad Meier
Linesmen: Mark Wheler, Trent Knorr

Three Stars: Patrick Maroon; Leon Draisaitl; Taylor Hall

  • I’m baaaaa-aaaaack! The last few weeks have been stuffed full of family visits, travel, and business obligations chewing up my time, which has meant watching games on PVR and not being able to run my usual post-games.
  • But tonight, for the return of Hallsy to the Chuk, I’m back in the saddle again!
  • NOTE: for completeness, this page has at the end of it the stats summaries for the games I missed, making this my longest post EVAR!

  • Once again, the Oilers dominated overall (though it was sluggish at times, which plays into NJDs hands), but Schneider stole them another point. Which is funny, because he hasn’t actually played well this year – but you’d never know it from his games against the Oilers.
  • Why do the Oilers struggle to score at home? Why? Is it really the ice? Are the fancy new digs too comfortable or something?
  • The Oilers owned the Corgis tonight, but scoring goals was like pulling teeth. Or elbowing them out of Zack Kassian’s mouth.
  • Speaking of which … yes, that elbow/butt end by Hall was dirty as hell – but thankfully it wasn’t against one of our skill players. If that was against McD or Nugey, I’d be lighting torches and carrying pitchforks. But it was actually against the craziest/dirtiest player on the Oilers, and it’s probably not a coincidence. Have we already so completely forgiven/forgotten poor Sammy’s mouth being turned into mush? I bet Taylor is still friends with Gagner, and I’ll also bet he hasn’t forgotten. I don’t like to see players hurt, and I won’t be upset if Hall gets some supplementary.  But as for Kassian, I still find it hard to cheer for him, and live by the sword …
  • OK, early in the season, I was kind of thinking that Milan’s poor 5v5 play was just a slow start. But this is really getting old. He’s still a solid possession player, but when he’s with McDavid, he’s compromising the scoring of our wunderkind. And when he isn’t, he’s getting absolutely destroyed scoring wise. And it’s often him flubbing the chances. You’ve got six million reasons why you better pull your head out of your you-know-where, bud!
  • The ending of this game was just beautiful, McDavid to Draisaitl in OT – that’s how the script is supposed to be written!

Game at a Glance

Second NJ game in a row where the Oilers overran my chart limits.

Leaderboard

  • Andrej Sekera, Patrick Maroon, Leon Draisaitl each had 1 goal
  • Connor McDavid blasted 5 shots on goal
  • Andrej Sekera was most active on the team with 9 shot attempts – whale of a game from Seksy
  • Connor McDavid was the faceoff champ at 80.0% (4-1)
  • Kris Russell led the team in on-ice 5v5 shot attempts at 81.5% (22-5) – whoah! Whooda thunk!
  • Ryan Nugent-Hopkins trailed the team in 5v5 on-ice shot attempts at 47.4% (9-10) – oh oh, I’m getting more and more concerned with our Nugey. Not scoring great, not possessing great. Like with Looch, need a lot more for $6M.  I am of the opinion that if Nuge, Ebs, and Poo (who in the not-so-distant past had a month-long run as the hottest scoring line in the league) were all playing up to their historical norms, this team wouldn’t be in a playoff battle, we’d be well established in the drivers seat for a spot.
  • Zack Kassian was the big hitter with 5
