G39 2017-01-03 Cbus and G40 2017-01-05 Patrick’s hat trick is a phat trick

NOTE: Due to family commitments, generating my post-game pages will be difficult this week. Uh, not to mention those pesky Juniors! (And f*ck what a horrible way to lose, dominate play for four periods and then lose by a shootout goal. Gross). So for simplicity, this game I’m combining with the Columbus game from a few days ago – you can find the Jackets game info in the bottom half of this page.

Game Notes BOS vs EDM

Edmonton Oilers (Head Coach: Todd McLellan) at Boston Bruins (Head Coach: Claude Julien)

NHL Game #578, TD Garden, 2017-01-05 05:00:00PM (GMT -0700)

Oilers 4-3

Referees: Dan O’Rourke, Eric Furlatt
Linesmen: Matt MacPherson, Brian Murphy

Three Stars: Patrick Maroon; Patrice Bergeron; Connor McDavid

  • Briefly: Talbot kept the Oilers in it through two and a half really terrible periods, and Patrick “Hat Trick” Maroon won it for them.
  • Lander, Letestu, and Pulju all got shut out on the shot attempts this game. Ugly! Good use of Pulju’s ELC year of eligibility too, amirite?
  • It *always* warms my heart to see Nugey score.
  • OK, the Oil probably didn’t deserve the two points. But you know what? I feel like over the last few seasons, there have been a lot of moral victories, where the Oilers were the better team overall but still came away with nothing. I’ll chalk this up to karmic payback.

  • Patrick Maroon led the team in on-ice 5v5 shot attempts at 43.8% (14-18). It’s almost like Maroon had an impact on this game or something.
  • Anton Lander, Mark Letestu, Jesse Puljujarvi trailed the team in on-ice shot attempts with 5v5 CF% of 0.0 – oh man.
  • Zack Kassian was the big hitter with 5

Game Notes CBJ vs EDM

Edmonton Oilers (Head Coach: Todd McLellan) at Columbus Blue Jackets (Head Coach: John Tortorella)

NHL Game #568, Nationwide Arena, 2017-01-03 05:00:00PM (GMT -0700)

Blue Jackets 3-1

Referees: Graham Skilliter, Kevin Pollock
Linesmen: Scott Driscoll, Brad Kovachik

Three Stars: William Karlsson; Seth Jones; Nick Foligno

  • Ugly game.
  • Columbus is playing ridiculously well, true, but that was ugly.  I had to watch this one on PVR. I did a lot of fast forwarding.
  • The fancystats make it look closer than it was IMO. But if you check the gameflow, you’ll see that was almost entirely a couple of minutes of huge pressure to start the third. The rest of the game was mostly Jackets.
