G36 2016-12-23 San Jose Sporks fork the Oilers

Game Notes S.J vs EDM

Edmonton Oilers (Head Coach: Todd McLellan) at San Jose Sharks (Head Coach: Peter DeBoer)

NHL Game #516, SAP Center at San Jose, 2016-12-23 08:30:00PM (GMT -0700)

Sharks 3-2 (OT)

Three Stars: Kevin Labanc; Joe Pavelski; Connor McDavid

  • This game is pretty easy to summarize: The Oilers sucked and Talbot was brilliant for two, then the Oilers pushed back enough in the third to tie it up and grab the point.
  • This was the umpteenth straight 3-2 game for the Oilers.
  • Competent reffing! Hallelujah! Think those last two games (and the deluge of GIFs showing blatant uncalled penalties while a ref watched carefully) finally embarrassed the league enough into doing something about it?
  • After being dominated for most of the game, I would have liked the Oilers to come out blazing and win it in OT for Talbot. It was not the high intensity 3 on 3 game I would have hoped for, and I suppose it’s an understatement to say the Sharks deserved the two points. And if you go 0 for 6 on the PP, it’s a pretty good indication of something.
  • And hey, even if we didn’t win – the extra point screws over the rest of the Pacific Division, and that’s always a good thing!
  • As far as the fancies go, well they pretty much show the domination of the Sharks at 5v5.
  • The matchup table shows that the only thing that De Boer was looking for was to get Vlasic and Braun out against McDavid – that’s one of the more extreme matchups I’ve ever seen.
  • After a couple of really good games, Letestube was at 22% on the Corsis, and 0% on the DangerFens.  Ouch!
  • Take a look at the Corsi/Dangerous Fenwick Overlay bar chart. Quite interesting to see how effective the Looch/Nuge/Ebs and Maroon/McD/Drai lines were … and conversely, how poor they were when you swapped the centers, with Looch/McD/Ebs and Maroon/Drai/Nuge being badly outshot.  Chemistry … I guess it’s a thing…
