G29 2016-12-08 Oilers … cheesesteak … Manning up … OK, I got nuthin’

Game Notes PHI vs EDM

Edmonton Oilers (Head Coach: Todd McLellan) at Philadelphia Flyers (Head Coach: Dave Hakstol)

NHL Game #397, Wells Fargo Center, 2016-12-08 05:00:00PM (GMT -0700)

Flyers 6-5

Referees: Jean Hebert, Kendrick Nicholson
Linesmen: Ryan Galloway, Mark Shewchyk

Three Stars: Claude Giroux; Jakub Voracek; Leon Draisaitl

  • Game summary:
    • The Flyers forgot about Drai
    • Then McDavid McDavid’d
    • Then the Oilers Oilered
    • Then the Flyers Oilered
    • Then the Oilers Oilered even harder
  • It is tough to be optimistic on nights like this, isn’t it? My Twitter feed is full of anger and sadness.
  • My frustration with this game can be found in the head to head matchup charts. The ONLY matchup that Hakstol chased tonight was vs the McDavid line. These are the most extreme h2h values I’ve seen yet.  Either it was a shutdown strategy, OR (it was pointed out to me by someone very smart) that it might have been a reverse shutdown, where they explicitly said “you guys are a one line team”, so here’s your sacrificial lamb of a line who will do everything they can to try and shut you down, but we like our chances against the other three lines.
  • And it seemed to work, because the Oil were outscored badly at even strength. That’s the sad part – when your special teams contribute three goals and are net positive and you still lose.
  • My worry is whether this will become the template for other teams to use to try and beat the Oilers. That was the concern the day the Oilers traded away the only other guy capable of driving his line to consistently outscoring the other team (and you know who I’m talking about).
  • No doubt the injuries on defense are starting to cause problems, but truthfully the guys who are the de facto #1 pairing (Klefbom / Larsson) were trashed pretty good.
