Game Notes EDM vs ARI

Arizona Coyotes (Head Coach: Dave Tippett) at Edmonton Oilers (Head Coach: Todd McLellan)

NHL Game #323, Rogers Place, 2016-11-27 01:00:00PM (GMT -0700)

Coyotes 2-1

Referees: Wes McCauley, Tom Chmielewski
Linesmen: Mark Wheler, Lonnie Cameron

Three Stars: Mike Smith; Oliver Ekman-Larsson; Oscar Klefbom

Note: in case you’re wondering why these are different from the Sporpsnet three stars, these are the official three stars as recorded by the NHL. Not sure who picks those.

  • Like the last game, I’m having trouble writing notes for this game. Like most ARI games, it’s a couple of goals surrounded by 55+ mins of nothing.
  • The Oilers are doing what they did during their losing streak – getting a ton of dangerous chances in close but making the other teams goalie look superhuman by whiffing and firing muffins. Though I do have to give Smith some credit – he was excellent at times.
  • I refuse to get in the whole whipping boy thing, but seriously Ebs, never practice your shot during off-season again. Ebs has never been a strong two-way player, but has always been able to outscore his mistakes because of those sweet sweet hands. Right now he might as well be wearing his gloves on the wrong hand!
  • The Oilers didn’t lose this game because of reffing, but for Chrissakes, the number of games we have to watch with absolutely brutal non-calls, with calls being made with almost no relationship to the actual on-ice infractions presumably in the name of “balance”, is sickening.
  • Like the last game, the only matchup Tippett chased was OEL against McDavid. Since it was a home game this time, I assume TMc was OK with it.
