  • Once again, a game where the results, the fancies, and the visual all conflict all over the ice. I’m waiting for a game, just one, where they all match!
  • The Canes ran away with the fancies tonight.  However! It is worth noting that the score adjusted numbers were almost even (50.5% for CAR). Score effects play a major role when you take a 3-0 lead.  If the numbers were the other way around, and the Oilers tried to rally from a 3-0 deficit and dominated the fancies the same way, I’d be pointing out that those excellent fancies were heavily score effect driven and something of a mirage. So on the flipside, I don’t mind giving the same credit for the Oilers in that department tonight.
  • I’ll take the two points, though. I’ll *always* take the two points. A moral loss and actual victory are 10x as good as a moral victory and actual loss.
  • That first minute, the middle minute, and the last minute was scary af!
  • There was a huge discrepancy in the ‘danger’ metrics for this one, in Carolina’s favour, but you can see from the gameflow it was almost all concentrated at exactly those points the starting minute, middle minute (at 10:00 or so of the second, all Jeff Skinner), and the last couple of minutes as CAR tried to tie it up.  Mostly even the rest of the way. Not good! But mostly even.
  • Nice to see Pitlick and Slappy score. In fact, both of them had terrific games. Shows in the stats too.
  • Solid game from Nurse as well. Larsson struggled, badly (not just the awful giveaway).
  • It’s funny, last year Kris Russell racked up blocked shots because he was so often a tire fire in his own zone (I live in Calgary, I’ve seen a lot of *gags* Flames games). This year, his blocks have been singular and well timed rather than coming in bunches as a result of trying to recover from bad coverage. Nice job so far, though I thought the good and bad in his game were both in full force – I didn’t think Russell was a good signing, I hope he makes me eat my words for the rest of the season.
  • Skinner as noted with three point blank chances in the middle of the third, and a bunch late. He was a one man wrecking crew, good luck (for us) he didn’t score.
  • Faaaaaar too many dangerous chances given up in general. Still tons of work left to do.
  • YOU CAN’T HAVE THAT MUCH O ZONE TIME WITH AN EMPTY NET AND NOT SCORE! COME ON!!   BUT WHAT A SAVE BY TALBOT WITH 2 s LEFT TO PRESERVE THE WIN!!
    • Sorry, I just felt a little shouting was justified.
  • In fact, just as I think Talbot was first in line to take responsibility for the stinker in BUF, this game he bailed out a mostly poor effort by the skaters in front of him, and was full value for the win.  He’d be my choice for first star.
