Game Notes PHI vs EDM
Edmonton Oilers (Head Coach: Todd McLellan) at Philadelphia Flyers (Head Coach: Dave Hakstol)
NHL Game #956, Wells Fargo Center, 2016-03-03 05:00:00PM (GMT -0700)
Oilers 4-0
Referees: Brad Watson, Kendrick Nicholson
Linesmen: Darren Gibbs, Michel Cormier
Three Stars: Cam Talbot; Taylor Hall; Adam Pardy
- The thing we’ll all remember about this game is that the Flyers tried to goon things up, and the Oilers beat them down.
- Let’s not forget:
- TALBOT has been brilliant for multiple games in a row
- Yak has real chemistry with McDavid. Chemistry is a thing. Wingers needing centres is a thing. Only with Yakupov are those two facts somehow a character flaw.
- I’m looking forward to watching those McDavid rushes for the next decade.
- Check out the shot visualization 5v5 and All – you can see a cluster on the “All” chart at 60 ft or so – that’s pretty much all Ghostisbehere I think! Man, for such a slimy little guy, he’s got one hell of a cannon.
- I’d LOVE to hear the refs explain why Gudas gets to throw a right hook at Hall’s head, then bear hug him, drive him back ten feet unpenalized …
- Remember that old saying “I was at the fights and a hockey game broke out”? Guess the refs forgot to turn off the UFC match?
- But maybe not, because when Kassian rushes in to defend Hall and Zach and Gudas are whacking each other in the head, the refs hand goes up, and Kassian gets the extra two.
- The Flyers were gooning it up pretty good, and yet somehow the PPs were net 6-2 in favour of the Flyers. Would love to hear that explanation too.
- Really, I’m just sooooo sick of the reffing. Astonishingly incompetent at the best of times, and open season on the Oilers stars the rest of the time. Sick of it.
Game at a Glance
The unweighted stats showed things about even. The score and danger adjusted stats – way in the Oilers favour.
Goal Overview
Look at the ‘danger rating’ of those goals. Ridiculous.

Defensemen
Nurse showed worst by the numbers, but I thought Clendening had a truly terrible game and dragged Nurse into the abyss with him.

Hoo boy, look at that number on Pardy and Davidson! That’s crazy! If you think that’s not real, check out the ‘shots against’ rink map for those two.

Terrific game from every line, except of course the Korpikoski line. Oh well, at least he scored shorthanded.

Defense Pairings WOWY
Each pairing (>2:00 EVTOI) is shown, along with how the individuals on that pairing did without each other on the ice. The axes show DangerousFenwick rates for and against. Note the reversed DFA axis. This lets the chart read naturally, where bottom left is bad and top right is good The dotted line shows the breakeven line.

“Copious and filthy”! I like it. You know the old saying: “I like my stats like I like my women …”
