G59 2016-02-18 Oilers at Wild – shot and distance data

Game Notes EDM vs MIN

NHL Game # 866 (Season 20152016)
  • Shot wise – that was about as good a 5v5 game as you could play and still lose.
  • Why did we lose? Because a. special teams, b. reffing, c. goaltending, d. a few egregious defensive breakdowns.
  • Speaking of which, the reffing in the NHL is basically a non-stop tire fire.  Embarrassing.
  • Great game from Yak, but NO it wasn’t the only one, far from it. He’s had a number of those games this season, especially early.  He’s been in an (understandable) funk since the ASG. Memories are short and biased.
  • I bet Connor has the flu that is supposedly hitting the team. He looked under the weather to my eye. Still scores a wicked goal. Sick Connor McDavid is better than Healthy Almost Every NHL Player.

New stuff! New WOWY chart, and I now append NHL video highlights at the end (once they’ve been published).

Defense Pairings WOWY

Testing out a new chart! Each pairing (>2:00 EVTOI) is shown, along with how the individuals on that pairing did with each other, and then how the two individuals did without each other on the ice.

The axes show DangerousFenwick rates for and against. Note the reversed DFA axis. This lets the chart read naturally, where bottom left is bad and top right is good. The dotted line shows the breakeven line.

The pairing performances are pretty bizarre. 25+88 got absolutely ripped in 2.5 minutes of ice, pretty much everyone else was in reasonable territory above the breakeven line.
