G52 2016-02-04 Oilers at Unelected Politicians – shot and distance data

Game Recap

  • Jordan McPooberle.  Vaguely gross name, terrific line!
  • Connor McDavid has revived the Oiler powerplay, and rejuvenated Jordan Eberle and Benoit Pouliot.  The Oilers have scored 5+ goals in two straight games since he returned. How many superlatives can a 19 year old generate in two games?
  • Weird game from Talbot, no?  Lots of great saves, but soft goals.  Oh well, I guess as long as he keeps it well over .900 every game, it doesn’t really matter!
  • Good Gord, did you see Nurse destroy that guy?  Darnell is still two years away from his man strength and weight.  Holy sh*t.  And did you see Pa Nurse’s reaction!
  • McDavid’s relentless backchecking seems to be contagious.  THAT PUCK IS MINE, NO YOU CAN’T HAVE IT, GIVE IT BACK.  Fantastic.
  • The fancystats in this game tell an interesting tale.  The unweighted stats show it to be close or in the Senators favour, but the score adjusted and danger weighted stats show it to be a big win by the Oilers.  If the danger weighted stats were also score adjusted, it would be a beatdown.  And it was.
  • The Oilers may not yet be ‘good’ – hey, these were terrible Blue Jackets and Senators teams they just beat down, not the Kings or Hawks – but I believe they are now definitively stating that they are better than the bottom feeders. And that is the first necessary step to becoming genuinely good.

Goal Overview

You can see from the danger weightings of these goals that it was not a goaltending classic – especially for the Sens.

Game Flows

Highly credible game from the three pairings.  Sekera-Fayne were weakest, not a great game from Fayne especially. Davidson is found money.
