Faith in bright tomorrows giving way to resignation?

Man, that was a tremendously sh*tty evening for what was quite possibly the best game the Oilers have played in years.

Thoughts:

1 – All of the medical opinions along with the research I’ve done suggests that with a broken clavicle, an 8 to 10 week recovery is in store for McDavid.  Less than that or more than that can happen, but shouldn’t be counted on.

2 – The all-star break is the week of Jan 23, with play resuming Feb 2.  January 23rd is pretty much 10 weeks from now.

So I’d bet on post-all-star game being when McDavid returns – it’s unlikely he’s ready to play very much before that anyway, and it makes sense to take advantage of that week if it’s even close.

When Peter Chiarelli says “months”, I’d say that’s what he means: November, December, and January.

3 – By my count, that means McDavid’s going to miss 37 games. Ouch. Basically half the season.

Bright spot?  Again, what opinions I’ve heard and research I’ve done suggests that a broken clavicle is almost always a recoverable injury without long-lasting consequences.  In that sense, it is better than a rotator cuff or labrum or other type of injury.

Younger players are more prone to this injury because the clavicle doesn’t fully harden until the age of 20 or so.

4 – Projected games missed:

5 – I was very encouraged by the D performance last night, esp. Griffin Reinhart. That game was him showing everything we hoped he’d be.  As I said in my post yesterday, three of the four games in which he partnered with Reinhart, Gryba looked like an actual NHL defenseman.  And he looked like it last night – despite the wonky play on one of the goals against, that was also probably Gryba’s best game in Oiler silks.

6 – Think about this reality: despite the brilliance of McDavid, this years results were and are more dependent on the defense and the goaltending, and what TMc can squeeze out of the rest of the team, than it is about Connor McDavid.

The team is less fun to watch without Connor, but then again … Draisaitl. Nurse. Davidson. Reinhart.

I’m not ready to shred my Oilers fan card just yet.

Character?  World class coaching?

Now’s the time to show it.

I find that everything in life can be captured with either a Simpson quote or a Rush lyric. Here’s a little-known and underappreciated Rush gem that pretty much captures the day.  You can’t tell yourself not to care.  Indeed.

“How It Is”

Here’s a little trap
That sometimes catches everyone
When today’s as far as we can see
Faith in bright tomorrows
Giving way to resignation
That’s how it is
How it’s going to be

It’s such a cloudy day
Seems we’ll never see the sun
Or feel the day has possibilities
Frozen in the moment…
The lack of imagination
Between how it is and how it ought to be

Here’s a little trap
That sometimes trips up everyone
When we tire of our own company
Sometimes we’re the last to see beyond the day’s frustrations
That’s how it is
How it’s going to be

It’s such a cloudy day
Seems we’ll never see the sun
I feel the day is all uncertainty
Burning in the moment
Trapped by the desperation
Between how it is and how it ought to be

Foot upon the stair
Shoulder to the wheel
You can’t tell yourself not to care
You can’t tell yourself how to feel
That’s how it is
Another cloudy day

  1. Number six is what went through my head when I heard the news. We romped on the Flyers last night with a defense corp consisting of four players with under 100 games played, three of which have under 20 games played. It is those four that this team sinks or swims on.
