Commentary
- Really, fate? Really? AND no call after Manning goes waterskiing behind McDavid from the top of the circle all the way to driving him into the boards? And Drai. And Hall. At what point does the NHL admit that its got a reffing problem?
- Otherwise that was as dominant a game as the Oilers have played.
- My dream tandem this summer was Talbot/Neuvirth. Dammit.
- I wasn’t sure about Gryba being out there, but as I posted earlier, he’s had his best games when paired with Reinhart. Apart from, you know, a goal, they looked pretty good out there.

Goal Overview
(Note: “Danger” is my calculation of how dangerous this shot is relative to an average shot, given shot type and distance. This is the number used in “Danger Adjusted Fenwick” below and in the chart above)

The average Scumbag shot was from 38 ft away, while the Oilers shots averaged 32 ft away – the Oilers were 17% closer.

Distance of Unblocked Shots Allowed
I’m trying out a new data display – showing the average distance of shot allowed and average ‘danger rating’ and Danger Fenwick rate per 60 for the defensemen and defensive pairings.
The DFA/60 clearly shows Reinhart and Gryba had a terrific game, while Sekera … not so much. Other than, you know, causing a goal against.
QoC had something to say about these results.
Player | EVTOI | DFA60 | AvgDistA | AvgDanger |
D. Nurse | 17:56 | 38.8 | 32.0 | 0.96 |
A. Sekera | 16:54 | 46.9 | 33.6 | 0.95 |
Klef | 16:06 | 38.4 | 38.6 | 0.79 |
B. Davidson | 15:40 | 32.6 | 44.8 | 0.65 |
E. Gryba | 15:14 | 16.5 | 31.3 | 0.71 |
G. Reinhart | 14:41 | 21.2 | 27.5 | 0.86 |
The main pairings showed a bit better than some of the individuals did.
Pairing | EVTOI | DFA60 | AvgDistA | AvgDanger |
A. Sekera D. Nurse | 15:36 | 39.2 | 31.9 | 1.0 |
Klef B. Davidson | 14:33 | 32.6 | 42.7 | 0.72 |
G. Reinhart E. Gryba | 14:02 | 16.7 | 28.0 | 0.79 |
I dropped pairings with less than 2:00 min TOI, but these are what cause the difference between the individuals and the main pairings.

Manning pushed Conners right hip throwing his balance off then he pile drives him. I hope the league looks at this .

I’m certain they won’t. It wasn’t a particularly dirty play (unlike, say, the elbow to the back of Hall). It unquestionably should have been a penalty though.
