(Note: “Danger” is my calculation of how dangerous this shot is relative to an average shot, given shot type and distance.  This is the number used in “Danger Adjusted Fenwick” below and in the chart above)

The average MTL shot was from 38 ft away, while the Oilers shots averaged 38 ft away – identical.  The histograms below show the breakdown by distance range.

Distance of Unblocked Shots Allowed

I’m trying out a new data display – showing the average distance of shot allowed and average ‘danger rating’ and Danger Fenwick rate per 60 for the defensemen and defensive pairings.  Interesting fact – the TOI for the defensemen is directly correlated with how good they were at preventing dangerous shots against.

Player Reg TOI EVTOI DFA60 AvgDistA AvgDanger
A. Sekera  22:18  18:42 22.5 44.1 0.7
Klef  21:02  15:24 20.6 42.6 0.8
D. Nurse  19:02  17:58 18.0 42.2 0.6
B. Davidson  14:00  13:59 22.7 39.3 0.9
E. Gryba  13:54  13:41 41.2 31.6 1.2
Ference  13:36  12:12 43.8 32.0 1.3
M. Fayne  10:04  09:15 27.2 25.3 1.4

I dropped pairings with less than 2:00 min TOI.
