The Chippiest Teams in the NHL

This is one of those idle data munging exercises you do – well, *I* do, maybe you have better things to do – because the kids are asleep and TV is crap and your mind wanders and you have the data at hand.

GO DATA!!

Who’s The Chippiest?

Results first, then I’ll explain after.

The chippiest teams in the NHL:

  1. Winnipeg
  2. Pittsburgh
  3. Columbus

The politest teams in the NHL:

  1. Chicago
  2. NY Rangers
  3. Carolina

Note that these match perfectly with penalties taken in the Top 3, but change a little bit in the Bottom 3. The biggest change from raw penalties taken to chippiness rank was Detroit, who dropped 18 spots.  They almost never take the kind of major penalties that drive the chippiness rank.

The biggest jumper was Edmonton, followed closely by Buffalo, +8 and +6 spots respectively.  Perhaps being chippy is not actually a winning strategy (unless you want to draft high).

Methodology

Here’s how I figured this out …

  1. I grabbed the penalty data for every team.
  2. I ranked the teams by penalties taken.
  3. I calculated “PenaltyRel”, which is the teams penalty count relative to the average penalty count.
  4. I calculated the count, % of penalties taken, and rank of the teams by “chippy” penalties, which I count as penalties in this list: ‘Clipping’, ‘Slashing’, ‘Roughing’, ‘Cross checking’, ‘Elbowing’, ‘Unsportsmanlike conduct’, ‘Instigator’, ‘Charging’, ‘Illegal check to head’, ‘Embellishment’, ‘Kneeing’, ‘Boarding’, ‘Aggressor’.  Most of these should be obvious; I decided to take a bit of liberty and include Embellishment.
  5. I calculated the count, % of penalties taken, and rank of teams by “major chippy” penalties, which I count as penalties in this list: ‘Fighting (maj)’, ‘Boarding (maj)’, ‘Checking from behind (maj)’, ‘Head butting (maj)’, ‘Butt ending (maj)’, ‘Spearing – double minor’
  6. Finally, I calculated a “ChippyIndex”, which was 100 x ( PenaltyRel + 2 x Chippy% + 3 x MajorChippy% ).  In other words, I counted the number of penalties taken, double the % of those that were chippy, and triple the % of those that were major chippy.

  1. How does chippiness correlate to winning? Do chippier teams regain possession on dump-ins at a higher rate? Do they PK better or worse? These are among the things I demand that you find out for me.

    1. Excellent question! When I first ran it, by eye at least, it didn’t look very correlative from chippiness to winning. If I get some time in the next while, I’ll see if there’s a correlation.between that, and also the PK. Not sure I can answer the dump-and-chase question.
